Comic Artist Q. When did you first start drawing cartoons?
A. Somewhere between eating solid food and taking my first step. Professionally in 1983.

Q. Who were the cartoonists who most influenced you?
A. Charles Schulz, Bill Holman, Gahan Wilson, Mort Drucker, Paul Coker, Charles Addams, Sam Gross, Bud Grace, Jack Zeigler, Matt Groening, Lynda Barry, Chuck Jones, Jack Davis, Mike Lester, Patrick McDonnell, Bazooka Joe and Betty Rubble.

Q. How did you get your professional start?
A. Sending out gag cartoons to magazines on speculation.

Q. How would you describe your style?
A. Dysfunctional.

Q. Where do you get your story ideas?
A. From personal experience.

Q. How did you come up with your characters?
A. They are based on real people from my family.

Q. Which are your favorite characters in your strip and why?
A. My favorite characters are the ones I happen to be drawing at any given moment. I focus on them and the gags I write for them.

Q. Do you create on a daily basis?
A. Yes

Q. Do you prefer to work in the morning or at night?
A. Days

Q. What materials do you use to draw your comics?
A. Do you use a computer? Pen and ink. I scan and color the art with a computer. I also send the work via online to my syndicate.

Q. Do you have any suggestions on how to become a professional cartoonist?
A. Practice and perseverance. Two things Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) once told me when I was young, green and stupid.
