SADD had sent me lots of material full of depressing statistics about death and injury from drunk driving. I wrote several strips using these statistics, but decided it was all too gloomy for a comic strip. It's okay to deal with heavy topics, but readers expect comics to entertain.
MADD stands for "Mothers Against Drunk Drivers." SADD stands for "Students Against Driving Drunk" which is how I wrote it in my strips. But many people, including an editor at my syndicate, thought SADD was "Students Against Drunk Driving." So all my text, including the tiny copy on the logo I lifted from SADD's brochure, was changed to "Students Against Drunk Driving" and that's how the strips appeared (see above strip). Millions of people learned about SADD that week - too bad the name was wrong.
